5 Ways to Polish Up Your LinkedIn Profile

Posted on 14 May 2018

LinkedIn is a great place to make new professional connections. Whether you are actively looking for a job or just want to connect with like-minded people, here are five tips for polishing up your LinkedIn profile.

1. Show them your best angle

First impressions are everything! Treat your Linkedin profile photo like a first meeting. Use an image that aligns with your role but makes you approachable as well. Users who include a profile image generally receive up to 21 times more profile views. You don't necessarily have to wear a suit especially if your occupation doesn't require one but look presentable.

Tips:

- Make sure it still looks like you! Get a new headshot every three to five years.
-  You can match your background to your profession e.g. architects in front of a building
- Don't use an inappropriate image e.g a photo with your friends

2. Refresh your skill set

Stay ahead of the game by continually learning and updating your skills. If you want to learn at your own pace in the comfort of your home, LinkedIn Learning is the one for you. The platform gives you access to more than 9,000 courses across a variety of topics from storytelling for designers to project management fundamentals

3. Don't be afraid to show off

What sets you apart from others? This is where you need to show off your skill set. List all past experiences that are relevant to your career goals. If applicable, add visuals like images, videos or presentations to your experience section. If you’ve just graduated, you can highlight your education, achievements and volunteer work.

4. Make sure you are contactable

Make it easy for people to get in touch with you! Add your contact information such as email and phone number. Make sure all links to your social profiles like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blog and website actually work.

5. Use keywords

Using keywords related to your profession will help with searches. The more precise you are the better! List all your skills in your field. Also adding a summary of 40 plus words makes your profile more likely to turn up in a future employer's search and adds an additional layer of personality to your profile.
