Travel Guide: Bali
Posted on 18 November 2014
It's been a long while since I've posted on my daily musings. I wanted to share some of my travel tips and post about my recent weekend in Bali, which was a veritable birthday bonanza. Trying to get friends together for dinner these days can be challenging, so getting thirty of them to fly in for a party is a whole lot of love. Whether it's been a beach holiday, dive trip or yoga retreat, every time I visit, I discover something new.
STAY
As all the party guests arrived at Hu'u Villas, the new resort attached to the notorious Hu'u Bar, we settled into the modern pool villas, which are just five minutes walk from Petitneget Beach in Seminyak. It's the best place to host a big group of friends as all the villas can open up and connect to one another.
If you want a little peace and quiet, head to Ubud Sari where I stayed for a week last year. The retreat is an ideal place for yoga, meditation classes and raw food cooking classes. You can visit all the nearby galleries and artisans for a spot of shopping.
EAT
There's nothing Brazilian about La Favela but it has the most amazing atmosphere, so much thought and detail went into decorating this place, you can wander in and out of every indoor and outdoor space. It's like a cross between a Disney haunted house, pirate ship, retro Mexican house and secret garden.
Head to Jimbaran Bay for seafood just off the beach where fishermen return with their daily catch. The beach is lined with local rustic restaurants grilling the freshest seafood to the sound of lapping waves. They even have a band serenading you at sunset!
SHOP
I have to visit Saya Gallery every chance I get. This has to be my favourite concept and design store on the Seminyak stretch. They sell beautifully handcrafted furniture, jewellery and tribal art sourced from the thousands of surrounding islands.
I recently moved into a new flat and have been on a home deco rampage. I drove past Mecredi and had to go in. They have everything; decorative mirrors, furniture, table sets, cushion covers and tassels. I wanted to buy everything.
DRINK
Motel Mexicola is yet another trendy bar that is a feast for the eyes. They do great drinks and really good food. Definitely not over-rated.
For something a little swankier and more romantic, go to farthest edge of Bali and have sunset drinks on the cliff side of The Rock Bar.
EXPERIENCE
Get out of bed and do the sunrise rice paddy walks in Ubud. It takes just over an hour and a half from beginning to end. The peace and tranquility is so worth getting out of bed for.
Dive the wreck at Manta Point and Tulamben. It's quite a drive up north but you get to see very different scenery along the mountains roads.
